# ScribeAI

> ScribeAI is a free, open-source, offline AI writing assistant for macOS. Select text in any app, press Option-Command-S, and it rewrites the text locally with an on-device WebGPU model — no server, no account, no upload. MIT licensed. The current release is v1.0.1.

ScribeAI runs entirely on Apple silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later, 8GB+ memory). The default model is a 4-bit quantized Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct served by MLC WebLLM at ~1.6GB peak VRAM, downloaded once (~390MB) and cached on device. Users may optionally add their own Gemini or OpenAI API key to route rewrites through a cloud model instead; that mode requires internet. The global hotkey is Option-Command-S, driven by a macOS accessibility agent.
